Ghana Union of Professional Students swears in new executives

The Ghana Union of Professional Students (GUPS) on Friday swore into office, Mr Charles Amposah, a level 400 student of the Institute of Professional Studies, as its President.

The other executive members include Mr Jerome Kuseh, General Secretary, Mr Daniel Ahedor, Treasurer, Nana Akua Twumwaa Asare, Coordinating Secretary and Ms Priscilla Asare, Women’s Commissioner.

The rest are Mr James Deku, Press and Information Secretary, Mr Frederick Ofori Addo, Projects and Programmes Coordinator, Mr Noah Anukware, Financial Controller and Alhassan Lukman, International Relations Secretary.

Mrs Sedina Tamakloe, National Co-ordinator of the National Youth Authority, said the theme for the occasion; “Politics of Insults – A Bad Recipe for Leadership and a Threat to National Development,” was critical to the attainment of peaceful general elections at 2012.

She said the authority had started a nationwide “Caravan Tour” aimed at actively engaging the country’s youths to contribute towards the building of a better Ghana.

Mrs Tamakloe said the tour aims at positioning the authority for “positive youth action and development in a better Ghana.”

She said the youth were very essential in the developmental process of any country, hence the need to provide them with the information they needed to perform their major roles in the political arena.

She urged members of youth groups not to allow themselves to be manipulated by ‘selfish politicians’ for their personal gains, adding, “do not fall prey to these politicians.”

Mrs Tamakloe said the Youth Policy was one of government’s interventions to ensure youth development and called on the new executive to demonstrate upright leadership roles to serve as strength behind the union.

Mr Osei Piesie-Anto, Dean of Students, African University College of Communication, urged the leaders to be responsible in their activities.

Mr Charles Amposah, the new President, appealed to government to re-visit the funds allocated to private tertiary institutions, since the human resource trained in those institutions help to develop the whole nation.

He called on government to improve on the infrastructure in the various institutions, particularly the libraries.

Mr Amponsah assured members of his outstanding leadership qualities that would transform the union.
