Akomadan to increase tomato production

Government has since last year sunk about GH¢3.5 million into the Akomadan Tomato Irrigation Project, to help increase the crop production in the Offinso North District of the Ashanti Region.

Mr Kojo Appiah-Kubi, District Chief Executive (DCE), said with this development the area anticipates the expansion of tomato production from the current 65 hectares to 165 hectares in the near future.

In addition, some farmer groups at Akomadan are also being given technical support to acquire skills and knowledge on new and efficient production technologies to sustain their livelihood whilst ensuring the growth of their businesses.

Mr Appiah-Kubi made this known during an interaction with Madam Anima Wilson, Regional Deputy Minister, on development projects in the District at the weekend.

He said the District Assembly had worked tirelessly to extend electricity to communities like Tanokwae, Sewua, Mfante and Serentiantia.

Madam Wilson acknowledged that Information, Communication and Technology (ICT) had become essential in achieving steady growth in all fields of human endeavour.

She said government would therefore intensify efforts to invest in the sector to benefit the nation.

The Deputy Minister used the occasion to present certificates to some 30 selected teachers in the Region who underwent six months training in ICT.

She commended the teachers for successfully completing the ICT course which was sponsored by the Ministry of Education and rLG Communications Ghana Limited.

Madam Wilson said about 4,500 teachers nationwide are expected to benefit from such ICT training programmes to boost their capacity in the sector to facilitate quality educational delivery.
