Alhaji Issahaku Saliah, Upper West Regional Minister, has said the Northern sector could play a crucial role in the country’s development if given the necessary help in the Agricultural and shea butter sector.

He said the shea-butter and agro-industrial areas had a lot of potential and that if given the appropriate support many businesses would grow within them.

Alhaji Saliah said to achieve this, the Government through the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) and the Savannah Accelerated Development Authority (SADA) were making efforts to promote private sector development by supporting the activities of farmer-based organisations.

He said this during a capacity building workshop organised by the Business Advocacy Challenge (BUSAC) Fund at Wa adding that these efforts would only be complete with the support of the private sector.

He said the SADA bill was passed to protect and promote the livelihoods of the people of the Northern Savannah Ecological Zone and also enhance private sector development in the area of agribusiness.

Alhaji Saliah said the public sector had to work in partnership with the BUSAC Fund Phase II Project in the SADA operational area to accelerate the development of the North.

He said the BUSAC Fund Project was in harmony with the efforts of government to support the private sector development to enhance local economic development and create jobs for the people.

Mr Dennis Puorideme, head of BUSAC Fund Tamale said the programme seeks to build the capacities of the private sector organisations to enable them identify, analyze and research into challenges in the business environment.

He said the workshop was aimed at building the capacity of the MMDAs to respond appropriately to the needs of the private sector and serve as a catalyst to accelerate the growth and development of the private sector in the region.
