Labour Commission issues ultimatum to Fair Wages Commission
The National Labour Commission has issued a two week ultimatum to the Ghana Fair Wages and Salary Commission to consult the Ministry of Finance to arrange the payment of the 15 per cent retention premium.
This premium which should have been paid to all eleven categories of the non- teaching staff of the Ghana Education Service in May this year has not been made.
It would be recalled that the delay in payment caused the staff to embark on a national industrial action of which the NLC intervened and spearheaded the negotiations.
In a press release signed jointly by Mr Peter K. Lumor and Mr Muhammdu Seidu Bogobiri, National Chairman and General Secretary of the Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU) of the Ghana Trades Union Congress (TUC), said the ultimatum was given after a closed door meeting between the GES, GLC, FWSC and TEWU.
It said “at the meeting, the GES informed us that the necessary data required by the FWSC on the eleven categories had been provided”.
“Based on this,” it continued “the NLC has given the FWSC two weeks from the date of the meeting held on September 28, to enable them hold a consultation with the Ministry of Finance, for the payment of the 15% Retention Premium”.
The release said negotiations for the further payment of 15% retention premium for another eleven classes of non-teaching staff of the GES would begin afterwards.

I wish to draw to he attention of the GLC/FWC the anomally associated to their categorisation of the grading system into Professionals and sub-professional ,which ithink is fair but for the simple reason that some sub-professionals have mistakenly been placed on the professional lader as far as their grading is consern as they are not Graduates.eg an Officer who was earlier graded as a Supply officer in our department an who was not a graduate is now for the simple reason that he was graded aSupply officer is now on level 16,the graduate entry point-(.2).an Officer who was graded earliar as a Loans Officer(Rural Housing) and not a graduate is now on the Professional ladder as a Loans Officer. I think the proper grading of such officers is the Sub-professional grade of Assistant Housing Loans Assistants. Please rectify the anomally because it is destorting the very system you wish to establish.
