President John Evans Atta Mills commissions GH¢30,000 water project at Sangonaa

President John Evans Atta Mills on Wednesday commissioned a pipe water project at Sangonaa, a fisher community at Teshie in the Greater Accra Region to put to rest the over one decade water problem in the community.

Throbbing drums, applause and thrill hailed the flow of water from the pipes as the President turned the taps on to commission the project that would serve the entire Teshie Old Town.

The GH¢30,000 project, financed with internally generated funds from the Ledzokuku Krowor Municipal Assembly (LEKMA), was one of the water projects President Mills tasked the Water Resources, Works and Housing Ministry to identify for deprived communities throughout the country as one of the means to improve the living conditions of the people.

President Mills, himself a resident in the Ledzokuku Constituency, reiterated that Government would continue to use the state resources to the benefit of the people and improve their living conditions.

He explained that governance was about providing the people with their basic needs and gave thanks to God Almighty for the wisdom and understanding and the ability to improve the conditions of the people.

“Water is life,” the President said, and assured the people of Ghana for the necessary Government intervention in areas hit by the dearth of water, so that they could enjoy life better.

In the case of Teshie, the situation became so serious some five years ago that compelled the people to march to Parliament with a protest not to vote in the then coming elections if Government did not adequately supply water to the constituents.

President Mills thanked the people for their support for the government of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), the MP, Nii Nortey Duah and the Municipal Chief Executive Daniel Amartey Mensah.

Nii Duah, expressed appreciation to the President for visiting the Constituency for the third time in a week.

He assured the people of more improvement in the water supply system in the Constituency and observed that a number of projects had been completed within the last two years under the Mills Administration.

These include the flagship project of the LEKMA Hospital, improvement in the road network and improved in electricity supply.

He appealed to stakeholders in the supply of water to link the northern part of Teshie to the system along the Spintex Road, which he said, would finally put to rest the problem of water scarsity in the Constituency.

He announced that a landing beach was to be constructed at the Teshie Sangonaa (Beach) with finance from the Chinese loan secured by the President last year.

Also, there are plans to build a library complex and an ICT Centre from the GETFund.

President Mills had earlier commissioned an electricity substation at Nugua in the Krowor Constituency, which was valued at four million euros.

He later inspected progress of work of a lecture hall complex at the Ghana Armed Forces and Staff College at Teshie and assured management and staff of government’s support for the successful completion of the project.
