Police recruits urged to live above reproach

Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Frank Adu-Poku, Director-General in-charge of Services of the Ghana Police Service, has asked police recruits to be patriotic and to avoid negative practices that will dent the image of the profession.

“Personnel, who exhibit tendencies of non-compliance with directives relating to their image cleansing will have themselves to blame”, he said.

DCOP Adu-Poku, who was speaking at the passing-out parade of 146 general recruits, in Koforidua on Friday,  expressed worry that the Police Service was perceived in several quarters as “corrupt, brutish, human rights unfriendly, inefficient and low-calibre,”   as a result of the misconduct of some personnel.

He said the Police Administration was determined to smoke out miscreants among the police, to restore the image of the police.

DCOP Adu-Poku said the Police administration launched a five- year Strategic National Policing Plan in  2010 aimed at raising the Police service to “world –class” status to be able to face challenges.

He said “This is to ensure that the people are well-protected at all times to enable them to go about their legitimate economic, social and political duties without hindrances by delinquents and avowed agents of violent”.

DCOP Adu-Poku said that instructors at the various police training schools in the country were taken through capacity building programmes and were exposed to modern policing concepts and practices, instructional methods and teaching skills.

He asked police personnel to be civil, courteous and receptive to foster good working relationship with the public whom they had sworn to serve and protect.
