President Mills inaugrates $5m teaching facility for UCC medical students
President John Evans Atta Mills has inaugurated a multi-purpose clinical teaching facility for the School of Medical Sciences of the University of Cape Coast (UCC).
He also inspected work on the construction of a diagnostic centre of the school.
The teaching facility and the diagnostic centre, funded by Airtel Ghana at the cost of $5 million, are part of the company’s corporate responsibilities.
The diagnostic centre, which is expected to be completed in 2012, consists of lecture theatres, three student pavilions and 13 offices for students and staff of the school.
Performing the ceremony, President Mills commended Airtel for being an instrument of change and help since the medical students would now complete their diagnosis at the Central Regional Hospital.
Hitherto, the students had to do their clinical diagnosis at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra.
President Mills assured the hospital that its application to the Ministry of Health for the upgrading of the Central Regional Hospital to a teaching hospital would be given due attention.
He said since a healthy nation was a wealthy nation, the government would spare no efforts at improving the health delivery system in the country.
The President urged the management of the hospital to maintain the facility so that the providers and beneficiaries would be satisfied with their efforts.
The Chief Executive Officer (International) and Joint Managing Director for Bharti Airtel Limited, Mr Manoj Kholi, said Airtel took up the responsibility of funding the projects, believing that business was not an end in itself but a means to achieving higher socio-economic goals.
Mr Kholi said the two-storey centre would be equipped with latest medical facilities and would be a one–stop centre for carrying out the most sophisticated diagnostic tests on patients.
