GIMPA Alumni organises fund raising towards $8.5m library project
The Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) Alumni Association at the weekend organised its first fund raising dinner in aid of an ultra-modern library project due for completion in 2014.
Professor Yaw Agyemang Badu, Rector of GIMPA, said the current library was constructed the same year the institute was established 50 years ago and lacked many of the rudimentary requirements of a modern library.
He said the proposed new library estimated to cost of $8.5 million would create a state-of-the-art teaching and learning centre, which would serve the needs of all.
Prof Badu noted that the proposed library would include reference computer terminals, special historical collections, presidential papers and memoirs, parliamentary research and ECOWAS collections, digitisation units and electronic workstation space.
He said when the image of GIMPA goes high, it would enhance the certificates of students and urged all to contribute towards the realisation of the new library project.
Dr Afua Kufuor, Director at the Office of International Programmes at GIMPA said the proposed library project would cover a total of 5,948 meter square with more than 5000 student’s capacity.
She appealed to individuals and corporate bodies to support the institute’s new vision and strategic plan for the library by making financial contributions.
Mr John Tia Akologo, Minister of Information said in a speech read on his behalf, that Ghana can boast of a dynamic economy because of the great professionals produced by GIMPA.
“It is time to give to GIMPA what it gives to the society,” he said.
He appealed to the students and the public to contribute at least a bag of cement or materials for the construction of the library.
Nana Apraku Cobbold, President of GIMPA Alumni Association said the body played a critical role in keeping the institute alive and enabling it to thrive over the years with strong organisation built on the dreams and character of its former managements.
He called for broad participation in the library initiative, which he said would provide students with the most modern technology and special collections and archival products for academic reference.
