UK to assist Ghana Police develop Public Order Management Manual

The British High Commission in Accra has supported the Ghana Police Service to train thirty personnel in the management of public order.

The two weeks course took officers through various subjects to enhance their knowledge on crowd management and order related issues like public order management. It was aimed at enhancing the relationship between the police and the public in the pursuit of providing security for citizens rather than the state, says the High Commission, November 11, 2011 in a statement published on its website.

According to the statement, Police Liaison Officer at the British High Commission, Keith Ashong, said the trainers for the course were from the UK National Policing Improvement Agency and would also “assist Ghana Police to develop a Public Order Management Manual which would serve as a guide in public order management.”

The Director General of Operations for the Ghana Police Service, DCOP John Kudalor, thanked the British High Commission for funding the training.

DCOP John Kudalor, the statement noted, stressed that the training was necessary to ensure that the freedom Ghana enjoys is not abused or violated either by individuals or state institutions such as the Police.

The Deputy British High Commissioner, Matthew Johnson, said “the main application of this training in real life situation is likely to be next year’s Presidential and Parliamentary elections”.
