Nigeria removes $7.5b worth subsidies on consumer fuel for fear of importing fuel from Ghana, others

The Federal Republic of Nigeria, is removing all subsidies worth $7.5 billion on consumer fuel prices to redirect the money on infrastructure and social programmes.

The VOA reports November 15, 2011 that Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan is moving to end a long-standing subsidy that keeps petroleum prices at an artificially low 40 cents per liter.

The VOA cites him as saying that the action is vital to the country’s economic future because continuing the subsidy means that Nigeria, Africa’s largest oil producer, “will find itself importing fuel from Ghana, Cameroon, Chad and Niger.”

Already the Nigeria is reported to have intentions of  importing oil from Niger due to lack of investments in the country’s refineries.

“In the quest for a better society, we may have to take decisions which would, at inception, be unpleasant in some cases. But we must face the reality, be honest with ourselves and ensure that we do our best for our country at all times,” the report cited President Jonathan as saying.

The decision is said to have gained support from all sections of the Nigerian population especially from foreign donors, bankers and some of the nation’s powerful state governors.

According to Dakuku Peterside, chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Petroleum Resources, the money saved from the subsidy will benefit Nigerians by increasing spending on roads, health care and power generation.

For avoidance doubts, the decision to remove fuel subsidy gained no popularity nor acceptance. In fact, the decision is threatening Nigeria’s stability as youths, labour unions, and other activist and human rights groups are planning protests and revolution for january when the removal will take effect.

How sure are we the poor citizen that money realize from removal of subsedy will be use for what he claim he want to use it for? The people that are in support do so because they will benefit from it, they are the rich men that are into oil trading, they will make more money because they will sell at their willin price. But for we surfferin nigerian it will have a very bad implication on us, if care is not takin the poor might get poorer while the rich get richer, this can even lead to riot.I’m not too sure Jonatan considered the poor before takin decisions, he has forgoten we supported him thinkin he was one of us(from poor home), he reason the way we reason, believe in what we believe in before he became president. As a youth corps member, many of my colleague lay down their lifes as sacrificial offering, lots of other includin myself defend his mandate with our lifes. He should be made to know that, whatever we don’t have power to handle as poor citizen of nigeria, there is a supreme God that will do justice to it all.

it is rather unfortunate that our president would be asking for removal of subsidy a time like this,if money is needed for redirection to reconstruct road, provide more health facilites ,why from subsidy that a common man like me have only enjoyed as far as Nig. is concerned. What happened to our recovered stollen money by the govt.officials, the wind fall frm oil revenue, the Abacha loot among others. For heaven sake do things that will only put smiles on the faces of the masses. We elected you to ease our pain not to add to it.To whom much is given much is expected, wake up Jonathan!you have been sleeping for too long

why not privatise oil industry as is done in the telecomminuction industry? at first we all cry but the resultant effects is so beautify now. removing fuel subsidy is not the answer because the masses will definately be at the mercy of importers who will charge any amount to recoup their return on investment but if other refinaries are built on private participation. there will be geniun competition which will later force price down .

It is an utter dismay that Jonathan is actually removing the oil subsidy and in fact is fiddling with the populace’s patience. Infact he didn’t mention the populace he said “powerful governors, foreign donors ……”Meaning he does not have the petition of the populace @ heart. I think this man is actually biting off more than he can chew and proverbially biting the fingers that feeds Him, Jonathan I pity you.

Ghanaian leaders should be wise because the world is getting smarter and smarter. Europeans were most richest but now see what is happening to their economy due to overspending and mismanagement, corruption, underground economy-lack of taxes to enable the government social programmes. look at Nigeria they are getting smarter.

  40. This is high time for Jonathan to go back to the drawing board as this will certainly help to avoid any problem that may arise from oil subsidies removal.Moreso,it’s a known fact that, the removal of oil subsidies at this very period, will have vast negative impacts on the less previleged Nigerians and even contribute to the downturn of industrial and small scale sectors of Nigerian economy. Is not the removal of oil subsidies we want but optimal utilisation of Nigeria’s natural resources. endowment.
