Sports Ministry to team up with AngloGold to provide tennis courts
The Ministry of Youth and Sports is to partner AngloGold Ashanti Mines (AGA) in the provision of 20 sporting courts in selected communities in the ten regions of the country with an aim at offering opportunities to the youth to train in especially the lesser none sports besides football.
The project, which would cost two million dollars and is to be funded by AGA, has tennis, volleyball, handball and other courts options depending upon the choice of the selected communities.
Mr Clement Kofi Humado , the Minister of Youth and Sports who announced these when he broke the ground for work to start on the construction of a multi – purpose tennis court at Obuasi, said youth development encompassed sports and other disciplines and it is for this reason that the Ministry was laying more emphasis on youth empowerment.
“We should make every effort that would make the youth healthy, athletic and good leaders tomorrow,” he said adding, “we want to ensure that the youth are integrated in decision making processes and also become part of the governance of the country.”
Mr Humado said that was why the Ministry had a policy to continually develop facilities to train the youth in other lesser known sports to tap latent talents for local and international feats.
The Minister said sports has become a big tool for national development and therefore “this venture of developing sporting courts in the communities is very important to the country’s goal of ensuring the youth are well placed to contribute towards the socio-economic development of the country and for other various reasons.”
He commended AGA and the Municipal Assembly for their achievements in sports and other disciplines that has put the area in the limelight.
The Municipal Chief Executive, Mr John Alexander Ackon enumerated the achievements of the Municipality in the areas of academic, sports and culture and commended the Ministry for taking the bold decision to build a tennis court complex at Obuasi and other communities.
Mr Kudjoe Fianoo , Chief Executive Officer of Ashanti Gold Sporting Club said AGA has contributed immensely not only in the development of football but other social activities in the country.
He suggested collaboration between the Ministry and AGA in the building of tartan tracks at the Len Clan stadium in Obuasi to help the youth in their athletic training regimens and other activities.
