Rehabilitate our roads – Akuapem South best farmer appeals
Mr Solomon Wiafe, Akuapem South Municipal Area’s best farmer, has appealed to government to help rehabilitate the Aburi-Nsawam road to help promote farming activities in the area.
He said most commercial farmers in the Akuapem South area use the road in order to reach the Tema harbour or the Kotoka International Airport for the export of their goods but because of the bad nature of the roads, they are forced to use the Nsawam road which is often filled with traffic.
Mr Wiafe said this when speaking at this year’s Eastern Regional farmers Day which was organized with the Akuapem Municipal Assembly at Fotobi near Nsawam.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (rtd), Cephas Kwesi Ageli of Yilo Krobo District won the best farmer award whiles Mr Philip Mehu of Atimpoku won the best fish farmer.
Dr Kwasi Akyem Apea-Kubi, the Eastern Regional Minister, called for an end to the system of open cattle rearing which allowed cattle to roam about and destroy the farms of others.
He said it is time that all ruminants including cattle and goats to be kept in kraals for them to be properly feed and cared for to help avoid the current daily tension between cattle farmers and other farmers and communities.
Dr Apea-Kubi called for an effective collaboration between the agriculture research stations in the Eastern Region and farmers in the region to help develop agriculture in the region.
Mr Mark Dompreh Amoako, the Akuapem South Municipal Chief Executive, joined the Regional Minister to present awards to the farmers for helping to promote agriculture in the region.
