Top Catholic Bishop resigns

The Most Reverend John Martin Kweku Nyamekye Darko, 66, Catholic Bishop of Sekondi-Takoradi Diocese has resigned, Apostolic Nuncio in Ghana Archbishop Leon B. Kalenga stated in Accra on Wednesday.

“The Holy Father accepted the resignation of the Most Rev. Darko in accordance with Canon 401 (2) of the Code of Canon Law,”  Father Emmanuel Abbey-Quaye, Assistant Secretary General, National Catholic Secretariat announced at a press conference on behalf of the Apostolic Nuncio.

According to the Apostolic Nuncio, Pope Benedict XVI has appointed Most Rev. Mathias Kobina Nketsiah, Metropolitan Archbishop of Cape Coast as the Apostolic Administrator ‘sede vacante’ of Sekondi-Takoradi.

“Archbishop Nketsiah has been asked to govern the Sekondi-Takoradi Diocese with all the inherent faculties, until a new Bishop is nominated,” the Apostolic Nuncio stated.

Most Rev. Darko was born at Aboadze in the Western Region on May 30, 1945; ordained as a Catholic Priest on July 25, 1976 and ordained and enthroned Bishop on October 10, 1998.
