Educationist worried about congestion at Daffiama Junior High School
Government’s pro-poor interventions in education have resulted in an increase un students enrolment at Daffiama Roman Catholic Junior High School in the Nadowli East District, creating congestion and affecting teaching and learning in the school.
There is the lack of infrastructure, particularly classroom blocks, and the current form three students, numbering 137 are overcrowded in one classroom with one teacher handling them.
Madam Mary Grace Bonye, Nadowli District Director of Education, made these known to Mr. Mathias Puozaa, Member of Parliament for the area, when he presented 40 computers to basic schools at Daffiama, Bussie, Owlo and Tori communities.
She expressed disappointment at the abysmal performance of basic schools in the district in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) in which four schools scored zero per cent.
Madam Bonye appealed to stakeholders in education in the district to play their roles appropriately to help improve school performance.
She commended Mr. Puozaa for contributing to the development of education in the area and cited the connection of some basic schools to the national electricity grid.
Madam Bonye said the computers would facilitate the teaching and learning of Information Communication and Technology.
Mr. Puozaa expressed dissatisfaction about congestion in some of the basic schools in the district, especially at Daffiama, and said: “I feel ashamed that 137 students are housed in one classroom with one teacher handling them”.
He promised to provide a classroom block for the school and also provide computers to all basic schools that were connected to electricity.
Mr. Puozaa appealed to stakeholders in education to assist pre-schools to build solid foundation for pupils before they transit to basic school and to support the expansion of structures at the basic school to absorb the growing population of children of school going age.
He presented a motorbike to Sazie Junior High School to facilitate administrative work, for scoring 100 per cent in the last BECE.
Mr Piozxaa gave a sponsorship package to a student from the school who scored aggregate 8 in the examination.
