German government assists Environmental Protection Agency to tackle climate change
The German Government, through the GTZ, on Tuesday presented some equipment to support the activities of the Environmental Education Programme on Climate Change of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
The GH¢6,000 equipment include a desktop computer, laptop computer, projector, scanner, printer and a digital camera.
Ms Isolde Rausch, Development Cooperation Attaché at the German Embassy in Accra, who made the presentation, said it was to support experts who had undergone training programmes in Germany and returned to their countries to impart the knowledge acquired to the people.
“When experts from developing countries after acquiring knowledge in developed countries return to impart them to their people it is a major contribution to development,” she explained.
She noted that Climatic Changes had significant effects on the environment, especially farming activities. Therefore, the German Government, she said, was assisting the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MOFA) with three million euros towards climatic change related projects.
Ms Rausch stressed the need for collaboration based on South-South cooperation among countries in Africa and Asia that had similar climatic conditions rather than with countries in Europe that had different climatic conditions.
Mr Antwi-Boasiako Amoah, Senior Programme Officer of EPA in-charge of the Education Programme, received the equipment expressed appreciation to the GIZ for the assistance.
He said the equipment would encourage the youth, especially school children, to appreciate the need to protect the environment and its effects on climate change.
“I hope the equipment will improve my output in delivery for a successful education programme,” he stated.
