Government asked to improve social sector

Reverend Dr Nii Amoo Darku, a Member of the Council of State, on Tuesday called on Government to strengthen the social sector.

He called for a programme to train social workers to enable them to effectively work to enhance the welfare of the aged in the country.

Rev. Dr Darku said Municipal and Metropolitan Assemblies and other bodies should initiate such a programme to enable them to be responsible to the aged.

Rev Amoo Darku was speaking at the launch of the Ghana National Ageing Policy on the theme:  “Ageing with Security and Dignity”, in Accra.

He said a National Ageing Policy has been developed to attain social, economic and cultural integration of older persons into society to enable them to participate in activities.

Rev. Darko said the policy also sought to promote the fundamental human rights of older persons and that “The Policy when meticulously implemented will address the problems confronting older persons in Ghana .”

Mr Enoch Teye Mensah, Minister of Employment and Social Welfare, said Ghanaians were living longer because of improvement in their standards of living.

Mr Mensah thanked the United Nations Fund on Population for its financial support and technical assistance for Help Aged Ghana.
