Inter-Party Dialogue Committee inaugurated in Bolgatanga

Mr Cletus Abang, the Deputy Director of the National Commission for Civic Education in the Upper East Region, has said key indicators for democracy and good governance is credible and peaceful elections.

He said Ghana had been internationally acclaimed as the beacon of democratic governance in Africa for its stable democratic system, peace and tranquility, economic progress and national development.

Mr. Abang said this during the formation of an Inter-Party Dialogue Committee (IPDC) in the Bolgatanga Municipality to promote peace and resolve conflicts before, during and after the 2012 general election.

He said over the years, the IPDC had provided an effective platform for key stakeholder engagements with political parties and had worked with the NCCE and the Electoral Commission in ensuring violence- free elections.

Mr Abang called for an effective conflict prevention programme to be put in place to prevent election related violence.

Mr. Abang said the committee would focus on mediation and resolution of petty conflicts, monitor the enforcement of the code of conduct of political parties, promote peacef and identify issues that have the potential to trigger election related conflicts.

Mr. Avolim-Win Sambila, Municipal Director of the NCCE and the Secretary to the Inter-party committee, said the committee would act as a buffer zone for constituencies to curtail unnecessary suspicions among political parties.

The committee has Mr. Mahmood Adam, a representative of the Regional Chief Imam as Chairman, Mr. Michael Adongo as the Vice Chairman, Madam Angelina Akurigo Alangdi as the Organizer and Madam Elizabeth Akugre as the Treasurer.

Membership of the committee comprise representatives of political parties, faith based organizations, civil society and community based organizations, the police, traditional authorities, independent  governance institutions and the media.
