CARD pilots “Aflatoun” Project in five schools in Wa Municipality
Community Aid for Rural Development (CARD), a rural based non-governmental organization committed to empowering the vulnerable in society, is piloting a project in five schools in the Wa Municipality dubbed “Aflatoun: Enhancing Children Educational, Social and Financial Enterprise”.
“Aflatoun” which is an Arabic term meaning “the Explorer” seeks to enhance the education prospects of children and promote their social and financial well being.
The project was brought to the Upper West Region through the efforts of SNV Netherlands Development Organisation in collaboration with the Ghana Education Service (GES) and CARD.
Speaking at the launch of the project in Wa on Tuesday, Mr. Alhassan Hudi Ziyat, CARD Programme Coordinator, said the balance approach to Child Social and Financial Education (CSFE) was what made the “Aflatoun” concept unique as it led children aged six to 14 years through the learning journey.
He said the project would focus on five core areas including the enhancement of children’s personal understanding and exploration, rights and responsibilities, saving and spending, planning and budgeting as well as child social and financial enterprise.
Mr. Moomin Solahudeen Tando, Vodafone World of Difference Ambassador, said the “Aflatoun” Project was very admirable to Vodafone and as such Vodafone had committed GH¢5,000.00 to support its implementation as part of its corporate social responsibility.
He said as part of the effort the youth would be empowered to campaign for a violence free election in the Municipality beginning from January 1, 2012.
