Communities in Ekumfi to enjoy uninterrupted water supply in 2012
Water shortage in the Ekumfi Traditional Area will be a thing of the past when the new water treatment plant being constructed at Gomoa Antseadze is completed in 2012.
This assurance was given by the Member of Parliament for the Mfantseman East, Mr George Kuntu Blankson at a fund-raising harvest organised by the people of Obidan, near Mankessim in aid of a teachers quarters for the town.
Mr Kuntu Blankson who is also the Deputy Majority Whip in Parliament, said the Government of the Professor John Evans Atta Mills was mindful that serving humanity meant serving God, therefore they would leave no stone unturned to provide useful facilities for the people.
He said the water treatment plant was born out of the perennial water shortages being experienced in parts of the Gomoa West District and the Ekumfi Traditional Area of the Mfantseman Municipality.
The MP said he was able to provide 18 school blocks for the people of Ekumfi in the past two and a half years and pledged to build the teachers’ quarters which the community needed in 2012.
He urged the people to institute a scholarship scheme to help the needy children to further their education and pledged GH¢ 2,000 as seed money for the scholarship scheme.
Mr David Andoh, Secretary to the Fund-raising Committee, said for the past 20 years, only two students from Obidan have passed the Basic Education Certificate Examination.
He attributed the abysmal performance of students in examinations to teachers not staying in the town to encourage pupils to learn at night.
He said they had decided to provide decent accommodation for teachers and also provide facilities which could make their stay in the community enjoyable.
He appealed to the Municipal assembly, donor agencies, corporate bodies and philanthropist to assist the town to turn the tide of poor students’ performance in examinations.
Mr Andoh appealed to the MP to find out what had become of a scholarship scheme promised students of the community by the Methodist Church and help students to enjoy it.
Ebusuapanyin Bedu IV who was also present appealed to the MP to help provide the community with a market.
