Regional House of Chiefs tasked to intervene in Sissala/Dagaaba land dispute
Mr. Cezar Kale, the Deputy Upper West Regional Minister, has said a land dispute between the Sissala and Dagaaba in the Sissala West District is the greatest security threat to the people of the region.
He described the situation as being so fragile that it had the potential of breaking out into a violent conflict and all must show concern about it.
Mr. Kale said this when addressing a durbar to mark the “Kukur Bagr” Festival of the chiefs and people of Fielmua on Thursday.
He appealed to the Regional House of Chiefs to intervene immediately to have the matter resolved in order to maintain peace in the area and the region as a whole.
The festival was on the theme: “Peace and Culture necessary tools for Development”.
Mr. Kale said the government had a commitment to provide good roads, improve on health and education infrastructure and provide the people with good drinking water and could therefore not afford to spend the limited resources on resolving conflicts.
He appealed to the two parties to cooperate with members of the Regional House of Chiefs in order to have the matter resolved immediately.
Naa Mwin-ir-me Danikuu II, Chief of Fielmua, described the disturbances arising out of the dispute as unfortunate, saying Sissala and Dagaaba were like twin brothers who shared the same blood and should rather be seen protecting each other from external attacks and not to quarrel over land.
He commended the state security apparatus for responding at the right time to contain the situation and pledged the cooperation of him and his people in order to have the matter resolved.
Naa Danikuu said the “Kukur Bagr” was not only celebrated to thank God for a successful harvest but also to foster peace and unity among the people.
In addition, it is also aimed at using culture in modeling the citizenry to be results oriented and achievers and not nation wreckers or war mongers.
He appealed to the government to mechanize one of the boreholes in Fielmua under the small town water system project and up-grade the Fielmua Health Cente to enable it meet the health needs of the people.
Mr. Haruna Bayirga, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Sissala West who donated 20 sewing machines, some desktop computers and an ambulance for the Fielmua Health Center, urged the people to smoke the peace pipe in order to enhance the development of the area.
