Three persons die in fire outbreak at Asylum Down

Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Timothy Yoosa Bonga, in-charge of Nima Divisional Police Command, on Tuesday confirmed that three people were burnt to death at dawn when a storey building was gutted by fire at Asylum Down, Accra.

Mr David Nii Teiko Ammah, 64, businessman, his wife Gifty Ammah, 51,  trader, and their daughter, Phoebi Ammah, a 10-year-old pupil of Services Primary School at Burma Camp, Accra, died when their storey building  caught fire while they were asleep.

ACP Bonga, who disclosed the tragedy to the Ghana News Agency in Accra, said the corpses had been deposited at the Police Hospital mortuary for autopsy.

He said the cause of the fire was unknown  and “The Police would depend on the Ghana National Fire Service as experts of fire management for the cause of the fire.”

ACP Bongo said the only information available to the police was an eyewitness account by Mr Richard Ammah, a nephew of the late Mr Ammah, who said the wild barking of a dog in the house around midnight alerted him and forced all the other occupants in the house to come out of their rooms only to realise that his uncle’s side of the compound house, a storey building,  was on fire.

He appealed to the general public to call the fire service and the police to save lives and property in such difficult situations.
