Workers get early pay
The Controller and Accountant-General’s Department has begun the payment of salaries to public sector workers on its payroll, in accordance with a directive by the government.
Last Friday, the government directed the payment of salaries to public sector workers as part of efforts to ameliorate some of the hardships facing workers following the recent upward adjustment in fuel prices.
The Controller and Accountant-General, Mr Raphael Tuffuor, told the Daily Graphic that the payment of salaries for January started on Friday, January 13, 2012.
“All public sector workers on the Controller and Accountant-General’s payroll who wish to access their salaries can do so through their banks,” he said,
“We wish to take this opportunity to thank the Bank of Ghana and all the commercial banks for their supportive roles,” he added.
He said the timing of the payment was very important, since it would cushion workers, more especially after they had made a lot expenditure during the Christmas and New Year festivities.
Mr Tuffuor said it was unfair for people to argue against the payment at this time, saying, “This is an extra effort by the government.”
He said interest would have accrued on the money saved between now and the ending of the month.
