UK wants Ghana to adopt its oil & gas growth model

The UK wants to teach Ghana how it was able to transform Aberdeen through the oil and gas sector.

Aberdeen, in the 1960’s has grown from a fishing port to a global centre of excellence in the oil and gas industry and the UK wants Ghanaians to adopt the same style especially for the oil city – Sekondi-Takoradi.

According to officials at the UK Trade and Investment (UKTI), it hosted a showcase on Aberdeen’s experience in the oil and gas sector at the British High Commission in Accra January 18, 2012.

And it hosted a consultant from Aberdeen City Council, Mr Gordon McIntosh who extensively knows “about the Aberdeen experience and also interacted with stakeholders in Ghana’s oil and gas sector.”

“In many ways, it can be used as the growth model for Ghana’s oil city, Sekondi-Takoradi,” said UKTI in a press release issued by the High Commission in Accra.

While in Ghana, the release said, Mr Gordon will also spend a few days with the Mayor of Sekondi-Takoradi and “in an advisory capacity, he will share with Metropolitan Assembly the challenges Aberdeen City Council had to overcome in developing the city with the growth of the North Sea oil industry.”
