NCCE intensifies campaign towards peaceful elections

The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has embarked on the formation of Inter-Party Dialogue Committees, nationwide, to assist make the coming December general polls, peaceful.

Mr Kwaku Appia-Kagyah, Kumasi Metropolitan Director of the Commission, said the Committees would work hand-in-hand with the district assemblies to sensitize voters on the code of conduct of the political parties before, during and after the elections.

Additionally, they would work with the National Peace Council and the media as well as other stakeholders to educate and aid the people to jettison violence.

Mr Appia-Kagyah, who was addressing the maiden meeting of the Kumasi Metropolitan Inter-Party Dialogue Committee, said more effort needed to be put in to remove suspicion, animosity and tension among the political parties.

He also drew attention to the need for all to recognize that ensuring peaceful elections was a collective responsibility.

Again it must be appreciated that elections were not about trading in insults and intimidation of political opponents.

He therefore appealed to the political parties and their supporters to be responsible and civil in their conduct as they crisscrossed the country canvassing for votes.

Nana Owusu Apeasah, Presiding Member of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, welcomed the NCCE’s initiative and said it should be supported to help calm political tension ahead of the polls.
