Provide land for health facilities – Awoonor-Williams
Dr John Koku Awoonor-Williams, Upper East Regional Director of Health Service, has tasked Chiefs and District Assemblies in the Region to help acquire lands for the development of health facilities.
The Regional Director who made the call at Bongo when he received medical equipment donated by Health Foundation of Ghana, an NGO to be given to the Bongo District Health Centre, said one of the major challenges militating against health delivery in the Region was the difficulty in getting land for the development of health facilities.
Dr Awoonor–Williams commended the chiefs and District Assemblies in the Garu–Tempane and the Kasssena-Nankana West for the proper acquisition of lands and handing them over to the Regional Directorate of Health Service.
He said plans have been developed to build an Ultra Modern District Hospital in these two areas to enhance health delivery and entreated the rest of the Districts in the Region to follow the footsteps of the Garu-Tempani and Kessena-Nankana West Districts if only they wanted to upgrade their health facilities.
“As a Region our health infrastructure for this year lies in Districts without hospitals. In this vein we are happy that approval and funding has been secured for the construction of the Garu-Tempane District Hospital where the chiefs and people and District Assembly have properly acquired and donated parcels of land for the project and this will be followed by the Kessena-Nankana West District”, he indicated.
He commended the Staff of the Bongo District Health Centre for playing major role in reducing maternal and neonatal deaths in the District Health systems and urged them to reposition themselves to manage maternal and newborn referrals from the lower facilities efficiently, and help improve health delivery at the local level through clinical supervision and coaching
The Paramount Chief of the Bongo Traditional Area, Naba Baba Salifu Aleemyarum, pledged to work with the Assembly to ensure that they acquired land for the expansion and upgrading of the Bongo District Health Centre to a District Hospital.
