Three persons nominated for 2012 World Children’s Prize
Three child rights advocates have been nominated for the 2012 World Children’s Prize on the Rights of the Child.
The nominees are Ms Anna Mollel of Tanzania, Ms Sakena Yacoobi of Afghanistan and Ms Ann Skelton of South Africa.
Miss Dorcas Quansah, a senior high school student made this known at a press conference in Takoradi to launch this year’s National World Children’s Prize on the Rights of the Child Programme.
She said the nominees have championed the cause of children and helped to uphold the rights of the child.
Miss Quansah said the nominees were selected by the 15-member World’s Children’s Prize International Child Jury.
She said Ms Mollel for more than 20 years struggled for children with disabilities in poor rural areas in Northern Tanzania while Ms Yacoobi is noted for her long but dangerous struggle to facilitate Afghan children and women’s right to education.
Ms Skelton was nominated for her more than 20 year long successful fight for the rights of children affected by the justice system.
Miss Quansah said children in the Western, Greater Accra, Central, Eastern and Brong Ahafo regions would participate in a global voting to select the winner of the prize in March this year.
She said children would interact with politicians of the country’s political parties and top civil servants on issues affecting children.
Miss Quansah said every country in the world except Somalia and the United States, has ratified the United Nation Convention on the Rights of the Child.
