Ghana will remain united- President Mills
President John Evans Atta Mills on Tuesday delivered an address to commemorate the 55th Anniversary of Ghana’s independence, and gave the assurance that government would put up all precautionary measures to ensure a violence- free election in December this year.
He said: “Ghana will remain the same before, during and after the general elections…and with hard work and dedication, we will build the better Ghana that we have all been yearning for.”
President Mills who was addressing a parade of security services, teachers and students, and members of the diplomatic corps at the independence square, said government would do everything under its purview to broaden democracy and encourage the youth to realize their dreams of holding the destiny of the country.
He called for the celebration of values that had over the years united Ghanaians, their heritage and orientations bequeathed by past heroes and to denounce divisive tendencies that had the tendency to undermine the country’s peace and stability.
President Mills also called for the collective resolve of all Ghanaians to move the country forward by paying glowing tribute to Dr Kwame Nkrumah and all other Africans who pioneered the struggle for independence and self-determination.
President Mills said 55 years of nationhood was no mean achievement, adding ‘that is the reason why we need to salute Kwame Nkrumah and all other gallant men and women who fought for our independence from our colonial masters.”
He appealed to the youth to continue to be patriotic and nationalistic notwithstanding the numerous developmental challenges they were facing ‘ because I can tell you that life without challenges is worthless.’
President Mills said although Kwame Nkrumah died so many years ago, his contributions towards the independence of Ghana and Africa were still alive, which encouraged the African Union to erect and unveil a statue in his honour in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
“I will like to encourage all the youth of the country to continue to work hard to ensure that the mantle that will be handed over to them will serve future growth and development.” he added.
