Ghana’s Food and Drugs Board cautions public on some Chinese medical devices

Ghana’s Food and Drugs Board (FDB) on Monday said it has seized some food supplements and unregistered medical devices being sold by a Chinese company, Jimon World Trading Limited, for the treatment of some life threatening disease conditions.

In a statement copied to the Ghana News agency in Accra, the FDB said the food supplements and unregistered ‘medical devices in question were imported and distributed by Jimon World Trading Limited, a Chinese company located at Ahodwo, a suburb of Kumasi in the Ashanti Region and Dzorwulu in Accra.

Some of the items seized include brassieres for the treatment of Breast Cancer; Men’s underwear for the treatment of prostate Cancer; and a Cup which according to the Company, when water is drunk from  it, could treat Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes, and improve blood circulation in the brain, among others.

The operations of the Jimon World Trading Limited contravene section 14, 15 and schedule II of the Food and Drugs Law (PNDCL305B).

The FDB wishes to alert the general public that the health claims being made by Jimon World Trading Limited are unsubstantiated and therefore advices that anyone who patronizes those products does so at his or her own risk.

The statement said some officials from the Chinese company including a Chinese and some Ghanaians were being investigated by the Police CID and that the Board had therefore seized the said food supplements and medical devices.
