Tanzania joins Angola, Namibia as country launches LTE technology

Tanzania has become the latest African country to launch the LTE technology for mobile after Angola and Namibia.

Namibia’s Mobile Telecommunications Limited  launched the LTE technology in the country’s capital city, Windhoek in May 2012, making it the second in Africa after Movicel of Angola launched the first LTE technology in Africa in April.

Smile Telecom Holdings Ltd., (Smile) launched the service in Dar es Salaam, with technology supplied by Alcatel-Lucent.

According to Alcatel Lucent, the network will be the first in Africa to provide 4G LTE services in the 800 MHz frequency band.

Following a limited pilot launch in April, Smile has rolled out the service in several districts of Dar es Salaam, including Mikocheni, Massani Peninsula, Oysterbay and Sinza.

The LTE technology enables high speed broadband internet services.
