Three burnt, 25 injured in fire outbreak at Axim
Tragedy struck residents of Axim in the Nzema East Municipality when fire gutted a filling station, burning three people beyond recognition and 25 people sustained serious burns.
The deceased had been deposited at the Axim Government Hospital morgue pending autopsy and the injured are on admission at the same health facility.
The Axim District Police Commander, Superintendent of Police Victor Oduro Abrokwa, confirmed the tragic incident to the Ghana News Agency in a telephone interview on Friday.
He said the tragic incident occurred at around 0900 hours on Friday morning when some people were buying pre-mix fuel at a filling station at Akyenim, near the Axim beach.
He said the underground fuel tank containing the premix fuel exploded and burst into flames.
The police could not state exactly what caused the explosion but believed the fire outbreak could have been ignited by power fluctuation.
The Axim Government Hospital Administrator, Mr. Joseph Ayie, told the GNA that the hospital had admitted 23 males and two females and that some of the victims could not be identified by their relatives because their faces had been burnt beyond recognition.
The Ghana National Fire Service personnel managed to put out the fire after an hour of battling the raging fire.
The Police and the Ghana National Fire Service have begun investigations into the cause of the fire.
