Group wants more work done to meet MDG on fair representation of women in governance

Mr Frank Bodza, Programme Officer for Governance at WILDAF, has called for the need to show more commitment in helping to meet the Millennium Development Goals on fair representation of women in politics.

Mr Frank Bodza, Programme Officer for Governance at WILDAF, said the constitutional proposition of greater involvement of women in managing the affairs of the state must be adhered to as a way of meeting the MDGs.

He said this at day’s workshop organized for media personnel in Takoradi.

Mr Bodza said since the 1960s when women had a greater percentage in parliament the situation had been different with successive governments.

The workshop on the theme: “Good Governance through Increasing Women’s Participation in Ghana’s Political Processes”, was to discuss how the media would support and give positive reportage on women contesting the 2012 elections, initiate peace programmes and strategize on how the media could educate Ghanaians on the electioneering process.

Mr Bodza said the workshop is under WILDAF’s ‘We Know Politics 11’ project, which is aimed at strengthening women participation and increase their representation in the democratic process.

The media, he said, had become a vibrant tool which could be used to promote issues of women adding that “the role of the media in 2012 elections is critical to sustaining Ghana’s democracy”.
