MTN says telecoms masts safe as microwaves
The Management of the MTN Ghana has assured the public that its masts installed in the various communities are very safe and not life threatening.
Mrs Cynthia Lumor, Corporate Services Executive (CSE) of MTN Ghana, who gave the assurance during a Editors forum at Takoradi, explained that the masts are installed to promote sound communication with customers.
She said MTN consults all relevant institutions, including the Environmental Protection Agency, to ensure the safety of the masts before installing them in the communities.
The CSE, allaying the fears of the communities hosting the towers, likened the masts to microwaves used in the homes, saying, “If the microwaves are not harmful then the masts too are safe”.
Highlighting MTN’s contribution to the socio-economic progress of the country, Mrs Lumor said apart from creating jobs, the MTN Ghana Foundation had invested more than GH¢7 million in education, healthcare and other social activities with much concentration in the deprived areas.
It has built Information and Communication Technology Centers (ICT Centres) in all the 10 regions, while capacity building courses have also be held for various workers and supported persons with disability. It has also offered scholarships for brilliant but needy students.
In the Western Region, she mentioned institutions like the Effia Nkwanta Hospital, Ahantaman Senior High School, Sefwi Abono, among others, as beneficiaries of MTNs’ material support.
Mrs Lumor, however, stated that the operation of MTN Ghana is frustrated by some negative interventions.
She mentioned some as the arbitrary fees charged by the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDA), destruction of its underground lines during road construction, scams and diesel thefts.
The CSE expressed the hope that these constraints would be resolved to ensure their smooth operations as more innovations were being introduced to promote business transaction on line for customers.
