Ghana’s participation at African Athletics Championship in limbo
Ghana’s participation at the forthcoming African Senior Athletics Championship scheduled for Porto Novo, Benin hangs by a thread due to a delay in the release of funds.
The championship fixed for June 26 to July 1, also serves as the final qualifying platform for the London 2012 Olympic Games for the Ghanaian athletes.
Information gathered by GNA Sports indicates that the national team, currently in camp at the University of Ghana, is completely at sea regarding their participation in the continental championship with barely a few days to the opening ceremony.
This is largely due to the fact the financial commitment to facilitate the team’s involvement have yet to be met with the National Sports Authority (NSA) being cited for blame.
A highly placed source told GNA Sports that the NSA has yet to release the needed funds for the championship to the Ghana Athletics Association (GAA) to enable them undertake the trip to Benin.
Officials of the GAA were yet to receive any positive news regarding their trip as at the close of Friday (June 22), their initial date for departure.
The team has until Sunday to make the trip for the championship that will feature elite athletes on the continent.
The GAA were banking on the championship to secure more athletes to join the likes of Vida Anim, Ignatius Gaisah and Margaret Simpson for the London 2012 Olympic Games.
