AfDB to hold high level Ministerial confab to assess Africa’s health sector
The African Development Bank (AfDB) will be hosting a high-level Ministerial conference to assess the health sector in Africa on the basis of accountability and value for money.
The event will take place in Tunisia July4-5, 2012 on the theme “Value for Money, Sustainability and Accountability in the Health Sector”.
About 45 African ministers of finance and ministers of health have confirmed their participation as well as heads of the largest multilateral organizations working in health, according to the AfDB.
Persons like Dr. Donald Kaberuka, President of the AfDB, Dr. Margaret Chan, Executive Director of the World Health Organisation, Dr. Michel Sidibe, Executive Director of UNAIDS, Dr. Babatunde Osotimehim, Executive Director for UNFPA, Mr. Gabriel Jaramillo, General Manager of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria and Mr. Seth Berkeley, CEO of the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunizations (GAVI) have all confirmed they will be there.
His Excellency Hamadi Jebali, Prime Minister of Tunisia will deliver the opening remarks with other high-profile speakers like Julio Frenk, Dean of the School of Public Health, Harvard University and Hans Rosling, Chairman of Gapminder Foundation delivering keynote speeches during the conference.
Officials say the conference will emphasize the urgent need for greater domestic accountability, reduced dependence on foreign aid and value for money in the delivery of health services in Africa.
