Dormaa West fails to elect Presiding Member
Members of the newly-created Dormaa-West District Assembly last Thursday, failed to elect a Presiding Member at its maiden meeting minutes after the inauguration of the Assembly.
After two rounds of voting supervised by officials of the Electoral Commission, none of the two contestants failed to secure the two thirds of the 14 votes cast.
This was after Lt. Col E. K. T. Donkor (rtd), Ghana’s Ambassador to Cote D’Ivoire had declared the new district duly inaugurated.
The meeting was adjourned for 10 days.
In the first round of voting, the two contestants, Messrs Paul Donkor and Paul Kwaku Peprah, secured eight and six votes respectively, thereby falling short of the required 12 votes.
Mr. Peprah was later disqualified but that did not make it possible for Mr. Donkor to secure the required two-thirds of all votes cast.
Mr. Vincent Oppong-Asamoah, Dormaa Municipal Chief Executive, described the Assembly’s inconclusive voting as unfortunate and unhealthy sign for the new district.
The inauguration of the district at Nkrankwanta brought to three the number of districts in the area once covered by Dormaa District with its headquarters at Dormaa-Ahenkro.
Dormaa-East District, with its capital at Wamfie, was earlier carved out of the original Dormaa District in 2007.
