Ghana slumps from 70th to 92nd position on 2012 Global Innovation Index
Ghana has fallen on the global innovation Index 2012. The country is at the 92nd position, according to the 2012 Global Innovation Index (GII) released July 3, 2012 which surveyed 141 countries worldwide.
Ghana was ranked 70th out of 125 countries in the 2011 edition of the Index.
The country, overall, scored 29.6 out of 100 indicating that Ghana’s innovation output and input placed 93rd and 91st respectively, according to the 2012 GII.
In sub-Sahara Africa, Ghana placed 6th.
The GII helps to create an environment in which innovation factors are under continual evaluation, and it provides a key tool for refining innovation policies.
The index was published by the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) and the world renowned business school INSEAD.
Innovation efficiency in Ghana, according to the index, was ranked 86th with a score of 0.7 out of 100.
Creative output from the country also had a low score of 25.5 out of 100 placing 98th globally.
Switzerland was ranked first, globally.
WIPO said the GII 2012 showed that a new dynamic of innovation is emerging regardless of deep and persistent innovation divides between countries and regions, adding “the most important innovation gaps exist between countries at different stages of development.”
On average, the UN specialized agency indicated that high-income countries outpace countries with less income per capita by a wide margin across the board in all innovation performance metrics.
It adds that large innovation divides also exist across geographic regions, especially when comparing average performances across high-income countries with those of other regions, such as Africa, large parts of Asia and Latin America.
