Minister commends AngloGold for investment in education
Mr Lee Ocran, Minister of Education has commended AngloGold Ashanti (AGA) Obuasi, for investing in Education, contributing significantly to the human resource development of the country.
“In this era where it is becoming increasingly clear that the state alone cannot shoulder the increasing cost of education, the contributions of companies like AGA is most commendable”, he said.
In a speech read on his behalf by Ms AmoahTetteh, his Deputy, at the 50th anniversary celebration of the AGA school at Obuasi, the Minister called on corporate bodies in the country to emulate AGA by investing part of their income into education and other social needs to complement that of government.
Speaking on the theme “Beyond Mining – 50 years of Building Academic Excellence and Human Resource for National Development”, Mr. Ocran noted that the theme aptly summed up the importance the company attaches to education and the development of the Ghanaian society.
He said the government had put in place far reaching policies and programmes to develop the human capital base of the country.
Mr. John Alexander Ackon, the Obuasi Municipal Chief Executive paid glowing tribute to the school for contributing significantly to Basic Education delivery in the municipality and the nation as a whole.
“AGA school has contributed significantly towards the development of education in the municipality, recording 100 percent in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).”
The MCE said the school had the potential to mature into a model school and even into a Senior High School.
The Headmaster, Mr. OwusuGyambrah commended the company for the support it had contributed over half a century to sustain the growth of the school, in terms of salary payment, logistical support and enhanced infrastructure.
He said the management of the company had promised to vote over US $ 2million to expand the existing facilities including the building of a new administration block and stocking new library with books.
Mr. Peter Anderton, the Senior Vice President of AGA Ghana, who chaired the function observed that the contributions the school and the company had made to sustain the country was in line with the company’s core value of making communities and host countries better off “for our being there”.
There were goodwill messages from the Ghana National Commission for UNESCO, the Adansi Traditional Council and the regional education Directorate.
A number of past head teachers, head masters, teachers, pupils and students were honoured for their good works with LCD Television Sets, double door refrigerators, cash and books.
