Ghana government celebrates one week of President Mills’s death
A solemn ceremony was held at the Osu Castle, Accra, on Tuesday to celebrate one week of the demise of President John Evans Atta Mills.
The Government delegation was led by President John Dramani Mahama, accompanied by his wife Lordina Mahama.
Other dignitaries present were former President Jerry John Rawlings and his wife Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings, Dr Kwabena Adjei, National Chairman of National Democratic Congress, Dr Mrs Mary Grant, former Member of Council of State.
In attendance was Mrs Georgina Theodora Wood, Chief Justice, Professor Kofi Awoonor, Chairman of Council of State, the security agencies with Ghana Navy Band in attendance to provide patriotic and melodious tunes to the gathering.
There were no speeches but Mr Henry Martey Newman, Chief of Staff in a brief address said: “Tuesday, July 24 when President Mills died, the country appreciated peace and today, we are celebrating his life”.
The late President Mills, 68, died at the 37th Military Hospital at 1415 hours.
Government has directed that a minute’s silence should be observed nation-wide to commemorate his death.
