Cadbury Ghana lifts education hopes in Western Region cocoa areas

Plans are far advanced to build residential facilities for teachers at Sekyere Adiembra near Daboase junction in the Wassa East district at an estimated cost of GH¢250,000

“The community is far from town and the teachers normally live in town. We are going to build four different self contained unit quarters,” Mrs Yaa Peprah Amekudzi, Programme Director for Cadbury Cocoa Partnership (Ghana) said.

“Since we installed the solar panels, the teachers have been organizing evening classes for the children and this has improved their academic performance,” Mrs Amekudzi told ghanabusinessnews.com during a tour in the Western Region.

She explains that if completed, the new quarters will allow teachers to be close to students.

Land for the construction has been released by the community free of charge and the contract has already been awarded.

“We are now left with handing over the site for the contractor to start work and by November work should be completed,” Mrs Amekudzi said.

In an interaction with journalists, Elizabeth Owusu, a 59 year old married woman with eight children, said they were not aware of the issues of child labour in the past but after CPP educated them on it, they have stopped the practice.

She was grateful to CCP for providing the only school in the community with solar panel which provides light for evening classes.

The chief of Sekyere Adiembra, Nana Osombo II told journalists that they have been educated on which type of insecticide to use on their cocoa trees and this has improved their cocoa yield.

At Sekyere Krobo cocoa farming community, Francis Owusu, a beneficiary of the programme underscored the fact that he has never been to school but through the Adult Education programme introduced by CCP he can now read and write.
