Ghana marks World Humanitarian Day
Reverend Dr Nii Amoo Darku, Member, Council of State, on Sunday commended the late President, John Evans Atta Mills, for his selflessness which endeared him to Ghanaians and the rest of the world.
He noted that the selfless and the humble nature of the late president would forever be remembered since all Ghanaians could attest to the fact.
Rev Amoo Darku, who was speaking at the Trinity Methodist Church at Martey Tsuru in Accra, commended Ghanaians for their support during the funeral of the late president.
The service which was organised by the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) in memory of the late president Mills, was to mark this year’s celebration of the United Nations World Humanitarian Day, which falls on August 19.
He said the World Humanitarian Day was instituted by the UN General Assembly in memory of those who lose their lives during humanitarian operations.
He commended the UN for the celebration of the World Humanitarian Day because it showed how the world appreciated selfless people.
“It’s sad to note that a lot of aid workers lose their lives while helping to provide better life for people especially those in war thorn countries,” he said.
Rev Amoo Darku noted that the day was instituted by the UN to enable people learn more about humanitarianism and for UN agencies to organise more humanitarian activities on such days.
“The Day is also to enable the UN pay its respect to those who have lost their lives during humanitarian operations,” he said.
Mr Kofi Portuphy, National NADMO Coordinator, who was emotional about the death of Professor Mills recounted the selfless nature of the late president.
“The late president worked very well with us whenever we are marking the World Humanitarian Day and had very good plans for NADMO,” he said.
He pledged NADMO’s commitment towards the provision of better humanitarian services to Ghanaians and called for public support of the organisation.
He said NADMO organised the memorial service due to the late president’s commitment towards the organisation and what it stood for.
Other activities to mark the Day included clean up exercises, talks on cleanliness and health screening.
