Gbagbo’s spokesman arrested in Ghana, to be extradited to Ivory Coast

Ex-Ivorian President Laurent Gbagbo

A spokesperson for ex-Ivorian leader now facing war crime charges in the Hague, Laurent Gbagbo, has been arrested in Ghana’s capital, Accra, reports say.

An Ivory Coast prosecutor named Noel Dje Enrike, according to reports by the Associated Press, said Gbagbo’s spokesman, Justin Kone Katinan, was arrested for crimes committed during Ivory Coast’s recent post-election violence.

The prosecutor said Kone Katinan was arrested in Accra, on Friday August 24, 2012 after returning on a flight from Johannesburg indicating that Ivorian lawyers are in Accra to negotiate his extradition, the AP reports.

There has been an international arrest warrant Mr Katinan for economic crimes.

About 3,000 persons were said to have been killed in Ivory Coast after Gbagbo refused to concede defeat to current President Alassane Ouattara in a November 2010 election.

Many of Gbagbo allies are believed to be living in Ghana.
