Host communities of Newmont Ghana benefit from $3m projects
As of the first quarter of 2012, the Newmont Ahafo Development Foundation (NADeF) had received over $8.25 million from the Ahafo Mining Company of Newmont Ghana located in the Brong Ahafo region.
The foundation was created to implement Newmont’s sustainable community development commitment to its 10 host communities such as Kenyase No. 1 and 2, Ntotroso, Gyedu and Yamfo.
Mr Agbeko Azumah, Communications Manager of the company told journalists from the Parliamentary Press Corps on a tour of the company’s facility in the region, that 24 % of the fund goes to human resource development, 23 % into infrastructure development and 18 % into social amenities and rest to areas such as economic empowerment.
So far, more than 30 key infrastructural and related projects have been completed across 10 communities at the cost of GH¢ 2,689,142.43 while 21 new projects are being executed this year at the cost of GH¢631,925.75
Other areas of interventions carried out include the provision of scholarships worth GH₵ 2,026,279.01 awarded to 2,335 students in tertiary and senior high schools with some 220 community members receiving GH¢70,000 (abt. $50,000) through micro -credits schemes GH¢500.00) .
So far, the total value of projects and investments made to date amount to some three million dollars.
